Parenting Thought.....Load Time

Do you find yourselves not getting places on time? Do you end up frustrated because you expected you would be on time but you can't get it together?

This was our family on Sunday mornings. No matter what we did, there was a disconnect on getting to church on time. We evaluated and determined it was more of a communication problem and expectation problem. We then implemented "LOAD TIME" instead of leave time. When trying to leave with a family of 5, no matter how seamless the walk from the garage door to the van door - it takes 5 minutes to wrangle a squirrely three year old, stop the tears of the 5 year old, and direct everyone to their seats so that we can buckle everyone in, AND then there can be buckle drama.

So instead of aiming for a time we need to leave by and always being late, we started a load time. This is the time we need to be walking toward the garage, confirming the shoe and coat choices, and buckling kids in. Generally it takes about 5 minutes for this all to happen and if we set the load time to be about 5 minutes before we need to be pulling out of the driveway - we can successfully arrive places on time. Yay, for a parenting WIN.
