Intensive care patient or secret government agent-in-training?
Well our new family blog starts out with high drama. We have been embroiled in a hostage situation at Alexian Brothers hospital. Our wonderful daughter Coralyn (pictures here) was born to us on July 9th and everything seemed normal. However after about 24 hours she was spitting up quite a bit and couldn't keep any food down. So they took her into the neonatal intensive care on the night of the 10th. Long story short, there was a temporary blockage in her intestines that cleared itself out overnight. We didn't think anything of it when they kept her the next couple days to monitor her. They still didn't want to release her when Lisa was discharged on Sunday. This was difficult, but if it was in Coralyn's best interests to stay we'd manage. However we reached a point a few days ago where she seemed to be acting like a normal newborn, but they still didn't want to let her go. The staff gave us their reasons, but given that we saw 4 different doctors in 5 days those reasons weren't always consistent. Grandma Lewis (a certified nurse midwife and registered nurse) was adamant that little Coralyn should be brought home immediately and a call to our pediatrician yielded a similar sentiment. However our attempts to get Coralyn discharged were rebuffed. At this point I've decided there are three possible reasons for this.
- This course of treatment is completely normal and I biased the facts when I told them to others who said she should be coming home
- The economy is rough, and the longer the hospital can keep her in the NICU, the longer they can weather the current economic downturn.
- She's actually been commandeered by our federal government for a top secret spy training program. When we leave at night she is put through a series of sophisticated training exercises. If she passes they'll send her home with us, but will have implanted a secret trigger-word deep within her subconcious. When she nears her physical zenith and the political climate of the day requires her services, they'll reawaken their sleeper agent and she'll morph from our sweet Coralyn into a well-trained, elite killing machine.
We've been told that Coralyn might be allowed to come home with us today, so we're praying that comes to fruition.
